How to find a font from an image
Take a photo of text you like and find the font, or the closest free alternative.
You see a poster, a shop board or a logo and want the same lettering in your own design. A font finder compares the shapes of the letters in your picture with a large collection of fonts and suggests the closest matches.
How to use Font Finder on JUST NODU
- Open justnodu.com and tap Font Finder.
- Upload a picture, or take a photo with your phone camera.
- Crop to the text you want to identify.
- Look through the suggested fonts. Free Google Fonts matches can be downloaded directly from Google Fonts.
How to take a photo that gets good matches
- Straight on: hold the phone parallel to the text. Slanted photos stretch the letters and confuse the matching.
- One line, large: crop to a single line or word. Bigger letters keep more detail.
- Sharp and well lit: avoid blur, shadows and reflections on glossy boards.
- More letters are better: a word with varied letters (like "Bangalore") tells far more than "III" or "OO".
- Plain background: dark text on a light background, or the reverse, works best.
When there is no exact match
Logos are often customised by hand: letters are stretched, joined or redrawn, so no font matches exactly. Handwritten and heavy script styles are also hard to identify. In those cases, use the closest suggestion and adjust spacing and weight, or ask the original designer.
Check the licence before you use a font
Fonts are software, and each has a licence. Fonts on Google Fonts are free for personal and commercial use under open licences such as the SIL Open Font License. Many commercial fonts require a paid licence for logos, printing or business use, even if a copy is easy to find online. If you design for clients, keep a note of where each font came from.
