How to open a CDR file without CorelDRAW
View, convert or edit a CorelDRAW (.cdr) design on any phone or computer, without buying CorelDRAW.
A file ending in .cdr is a CorelDRAW drawing. Printers, sign shops and DTP centres use CorelDRAW every day for visiting cards, wedding invitations, banners, flex boards and labels, so a CDR file is often what you receive when you ask a designer for the "open file" of your work. The trouble is that almost nothing except CorelDRAW itself can open it: Windows Photos, phone galleries, WhatsApp and Google Drive will only show a generic icon.
Why CDR files are hard to open
CDR is a closed, proprietary format. Its structure has changed with almost every CorelDRAW version (X3, X4, X5 … 2024), and newer versions store the drawing as a compressed package with separate parts for pages, objects, fonts and embedded images. Free viewers usually understand only some versions, which is why a file from a new CorelDRAW often fails in older tools, and a file saved in a very old version can confuse newer viewers.
Open a CDR file with JUST NODU
- Go to justnodu.com on your phone or computer (or open the JUST NODU Android app).
- Tap the .CDR CorelDRAW card and choose your file. A .zip that contains a CDR file also works.
- Wait while the file is opened. Large files with many photos take longer; the progress screen shows how far it is.
- The design appears as a sharp preview. From there you can zoom, download it as PDF, PNG or JPG, or open it in the editor to move, resize, recolour or delete objects and change text.

Common problems and fixes
The text looks different from the original
A CDR file normally does not carry the fonts it uses. If the designer used a font that is not available, a similar font is substituted. Ask the designer to convert text to curves before sending the file, or to send the fonts along with it. Some images are missing
CorelDRAW can link photos instead of embedding them. A linked photo is not inside the CDR file, so no viewer can show it. Ask for the file to be saved with images embedded, or for the photos to be sent separately.
The file will not open at all
- Check that the file finished downloading (a CDR of only a few kilobytes is usually broken).
- Files sent through some chat apps are renamed or compressed; ask for the file again as a document, or zipped.
- Ask the designer to also export a PDF. A PDF made from CorelDRAW keeps the layout exactly and opens everywhere.
